Do you want to:
- Be at the top of your game?
- Be used by God on a grand scale?
- Leave a legacy behind?
- Be a respected and honored leader?
- Be somebody that makes a difference both now and for eternity?
- Have a dynamic marriage partnership?
The answer to how you can achieve this may surprise you. It is found in Matt 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Before I lose your attention, let me provide a clear definition of what it means to be meek. Let’s start with the opposite of meek to paint a more vivid picture. As defined by Merriam-Webster, the opposite of meek is egotistic, pompous, haughty, and aggressive. Can you think of someone who has those traits? Even if they achieve some of the things on the list above, are they someone you respect and want to pattern your life after?
By contrast, to be meek is to:
- be someone who does not assert themselves over others to further their own selfish agenda.
- doesn’t envy or retaliate in the face of adversity.
- exercises patience and prudence.
- serves with joy, honoring the one they are serving.
Now that is a dynamic combination of humble power (aka powerfully meek). Jesus was the perfect example of someone who was powerfully meek. He had all power and authority, but He came as a humble servant (Mt 20:28). He preached and taught, fed the hungry, healed and restored both body and soul, washed feet, and ultimately gave His life a ransom for all. No one made a greater impact on humanity than Jesus Christ, the most powerfully meek person in history.
Before Jesus left to go back to Heaven, He challenged us to do greater things than even He was doing so that our Father would be glorified in us even as He was glorified through Jesus (Jn 14:12-13). He promised to send the Holy Spirit to help us do that. Most of us are not called to sacrifice our lives, but we are all called to live sacrificial lives in service to others for Christ. What does that look like on a practical basis both personally and professionally?
For husbands, it’s being a servant in the practical sense by helping your wife in areas where she may be overwhelmed, weary, or just need a helping hand occasionally. In the emotional sense, it may be listening to understand rather than fix. In the spiritual sense, it may be humbling yourself by being the first one to say “I’m sorry” when restitution needs to be made.
For wives, the adage, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” is often a simple and practical way to serve your husband well! Emotional ‘feeding’ is equally powerful. Don’t be stingy with your words of affirmation and encouragement. Initiating intimacy is another powerful emotional and physical ‘feeding’ for your husband.
For leaders, ask your employees how you can serve them. Learn the art of being silent at the right time, surrendering your will at times for the good of others. Offer them training that empowers and develops them to utilize their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Pay them a fair wage.
Master the art of becoming a powerful person with a meek approach. You will not only have greater success but greater respect. To hear more on this topic, check out my podcast, Episode #8 Powerfully Meek.
