When we think of the term ‘old-fashioned’, we often think of something or someone irrelevant, behind the times, or outdated. For example, someone who doesn’t use technology may be considered old-fashioned. Or someone who dresses up like they’re going to Sunday service every day whether they have anywhere to go or not may be considered old-fashioned. There are old-fashioned cars, décor styles, clothing types, and even some methods of transportation may be considered old-fashioned. All of these are influenced by the perception of the person experiencing them. And honestly, their perception or viewpoint although debatable by some, is little more than a mere observation or opportunity for fun banter.

The area of love can be one of those terms that when defined by certain parameters, some may consider to be old-fashioned. Most would agree that being loved by someone is the greatest feeling in the world. But unfortunately, in this day and age, it feels more and more as though love can have a myriad of interpretations depending on the ideals and perceptions of the person doing it out.

When we talk about the agape type of love, there seems to be less confusion because we know that it is a selfless, perfect, type of love demonstrated by God toward us that is impossible for our sinful nature to naturally embrace and achieve. But society has tainted other types of love with cultural ideals, fantasies, and expectations that muddy their definition and purpose. So, how can we be certain that we are preserving the true meaning and purpose of love in marriage?

As with any moral standard, God’s word is always our true north.

• The counsel of the Lord stands forever; the plans of His heart to all generations (Ps 33:11).
• Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away (Mt 24:35).
• You will know the truth and the truth will set you free (Jn 8:32).
• These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise (Deut 6:5-7).
• And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Tim 2:2).

Look to God’s word to challenge you toward truth in these changing times, because although culture may change, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His love and definition of love though some may consider it to be old-fashioned, is just as powerful, purposeful, and passionate today as it was in the beginning of time.
